Sockhead Hats

I LOVE making Sockhead Hats!  Super easy and a great way to use your sock yarn skeins.

Here are some I finished up last month.

I used needle size US 2.5 (3.00mm) for all of them.

The one above uses:
James C Brett Moonlight Sonata DK

This is one skein of
KnitPicks Hawthorne Fingering in Ladd's Addition

Knit Picks Hawthorne Fingering in St. Johns

Knit Picks Stroll Fingering in Mocha Tonal

You can find more information and the free pattern link on my Ravelry project page.

If you are using Patons Sock Yarn, I would suggest using a US 3.0 or 3.25.  I found that using the needle recommended in the pattern made for a too tight hat.

Best,
Sheila

Yarn tip:
Don't have a complete skein for a Sockhead Hat?  Gather all your leftover sock yarn and make stripes instead.

  1. I love making hats but have never tried using sock yarn. I'll have to add it to my list!

    1. Mine too, Marianne. Sometimes I think yarn is a bit like wine.....the less expensive is my favorite!

    1. I hear ya about the hat-looking-good-on-me issue. I think most women feels this way. I love how my daughter looks in this style of hat. The key is to make sure your hair is showing. Even if you have short hair, pull some down around your face.

  8. Your sockhead looks great! I've only knit one and it was a gauge disaster. I should check to see if the pattern has been updated.

    1. The biggest problem I've run across is that not all fingering weight yarns are alike. I use the 3mm needle suggested in the pattern, but get a different gauge when the fingering yarn is, say, Knit Picks or Patons Kroy. The Knit Picks yarn makes for a little bit larger hat. When I use the Patons, it's a wee bit tight.

I just makes notes all over the paper pattern about which yarn and needle size I'm using for the best result.
