Baby Slouchy Hats Pattern!

 

I'm a big fan of Bohoknits Sockhead Hat pattern.  It's my go-to pattern for traveling, adult gift giving and knitting-to-relax.  I decided to write a pattern for babies and toddlers as I often need a baby shower gift.  Also, a new mom will get plenty of blankets at the party.  

It's a relatively quick knit and a great project for your left over sock yarn.  The 2 x 2 rib makes for a very stretchy band to fits lots of wee noggins!

The yarn for this one is by indie dyer Abi Grasso.  You might know her from her fabulous picture yarns she has in her Etsy shop.  This particular yarn is Sparkly Sock Yarn in Nebula Cloud.  You can get quite a few hats from one skein as it is 460 yards/420m.  This would make for a fun adult hat too!

 This yarn is one skein of Madeline Tosh Merino Light in Cosmic Wonder Dust.  I love this one as it reminds me of a cupcake.  How cute would this be if you presented it in a little cupcake box?  

This box has little cupcake toys in it.  I have found these boxes in Hobby Lobby, Sur Le Table, Walmart and Michael's.  You can find my pattern for the cupcakes in my pattern stores.  The link is at the top of my blog page or below, at the end of this post.

I would rate this as a advanced beginner or better knitter. You need to know how to knit in the round on circular needles and use double point needles. Increase and decrease skills are also needed. 

Knit up these cute little slouchy hats for a baby, toddler or child. All three sizes provided. Great project to use up your sock yarn.

 Now, a little info about the display.  I have always found it difficult to photograph baby hats on something other than a live baby.  My "baby" is 22 years old and does a great job as my model for adult wear, but what to do about baby hats?

To the rescue....Tamara Kelly of Moogly fame.  Just LOOK at her great idea below and the very cute hats!  Her pattern is free, too!

I adore her idea I first saw on Instagram and contacted her right away.  She explained to me that she used pieces of a olive oil container she has had for some time.  Off to the stores I go!

I found these at Hobby Lobby.  The container on the left is from the craft side of the store where they have glass containers.  The one on the right is from the floral department.  I just took the lid off the jar and put the "fishbowl" on top of it, bottom side up.  I used a little sticky tack to keep the two pieces together.  I think it worked out great!

I find that giving a simple hat as a gift a little uninteresting.  To make it special, it's all in the box.  Think out of the box, so to speak.  Use a cupcake box, like the one above or...

 

look at this sweet Mary Engelbreit hat box.  And this faux tree log box below.  I found all of them at a thrift store for $2.00 each.  The tree log box had potpourri in it.  So, when you run across a container that looks interesting, take it home!

Granny in Spring

I posted last month about my Mohair Blanket with Daisies and I loved it so much, I crocheted another one!  Patons Lace Sequins in Quartz (2 skeins) and Peridot (5 skeins) and a J hook.  

The photo doesn't show the very subtle sparkles in this yarn.  It's just enough bling without being garish.  

No design plan here, just changing colors every so often.  It so reminds me of Spring or Easter time!  It would be a great baby girl gift for an April or May birth.

It's still a work in progress, but my plan is to crochet a simple, single crochet, edge.  Then, adding the Quartz daisies along the edge every so often.  I should have it done by next week.

I'm using the same daisy loom I used with the first blanket, only wrapping more times around to get a thicker flower.

If you're making pretties to add to your projects, using the same yarn, make them first, so you don't run out of yarn.  

Fringe all along the edge would be fun.

Would be cute as a photo prop too!  Drape it in an Easter basket with baby inside!

After hand washing your just knitted socks, and squeezing them gently, get out your salad spinner and "spin" the rest of the water out!

Technicolor Granny Blanket - 2nd Pattern In A Series of Four!

If you followed my post last week, you know about the Technicolor Chevron Blanket.  Well, here is project number two is a series of four!

Yarn tip from Knitsimple:
Not sure if you have enough yarn left to make it across the next row?  Stretch the yarn gently across the entire width of the piece back and forth three times.  If you can make it back to the edge, you'll have enough to complete the row.

A Wee Zebra Hat

Making a showing today is a little Zebra Hat for a baby girl on the way!  I just loved knitting this up for a newborn noggin in hot pink and black.  The feather topper is actually a hair clip that can be easily removed to launder the hat.  I purchased this topper at Hobby Lobby.  A great photo prop!

I also have made a number of these Giraffe Hats for noggins of all sizes!  Also a great photo prop.  This is a very popular color combo for "gender to be determined" babies.  I'd really like to make one in tan and brown.

I knitted this myself from her book, Itty Bitty Toys.  It's a large toy perfect for any girl or boy. Take a look again at the top picture and you can see may hand behind the head.  That will give you an idea of the size.  If you follow my blog, you know my daughter is in college, so, in the plastic storage bin it goes awaiting a future grandchild!  How cute would this be in a long run yarn.  True to life browns and creams would be stunning.  Adding the right amount of spots is SO worth it!

Pom Pom Love

I love pom poms!  Actually, it might be that I love circles.  The soft edge of a circle.  The squishy goodness of a round yarn pom.  The circle of life, ring of fire....you get the idea!  I made this blanket for an up coming baby shower.  As I have been knitting and crocheting for years.....over 30.....I'm expected to give something hand made with love!  I confess, I'm happy to do it!  Above is my latest!

Light grey, worsted weight yarn from Hobby Lobby.  Three skeins of I Love This Yarn in light grey.  The pom pom yarn is from Herrschners called Pom Pom Parade, 2 skeins.  Now, I just went on their site and I did not see it!  Maybe they have discontinued that line, so you might have to do a little searching.

I used this pattern from my Craftsy pattern store.

I love the simple elegance of this stitch.  Looks great on both sides making the blanket reversible.  I also am a big fan of grey for babies.  I know, not your typical color choice, but modern moms love it!  Works great for a boy or a girl.

I included a hefty basket too!  I used this pattern from Crochet in Color and crocheted over the yarn between the poms as I went.  Really easy and no cutting of the yarn until the end.  I still need to line the basket with fabric which will help it stand upright.

I used a G/4.0mm hook for both the blanket and bucket.  On the blanket, the pom pom yarn is slip stitched all the way around and I secured the end with a needle and thread.  I love the finished products and I hope you do too!
